I’ve tested these air fryer hot dogs more than 100 times in air fryer baskets and air fryer ovens and they always come out perfect. Why so much? My kids keep asking for them!

Quick and Easy Air Fryer Hot Dog Recipe

The first time I made air fryer hot dogs was actually a mistake. My husband went to put them on the grill and he realized our grill had run out of propane.

Our kids were hungry, so I threw them in the air fryer. Turns out when you air fry a hot dog, it tastes even better than grilling! Since then we’ve never grilled a hot dog and only eat them when they’re air fried.

My daughter absolutely loves hot dogs, so I’ve literally made this recipe more than a hundred times in the past few years because she requests it so much.

There’s just something about the skin, texture, and juiciness of the hot dog that the grill doesn’t replicate for us, so we’re obsessed!

I pair them with my french fries, corn on the cob, and watermelon salad recipes for a full everyday meal!

Ingredients for Air Fryer Hot Dogs

  • Hot dogs — I’ve used skinny hot dogs such as Ball Park and jumbo hot dogs
  • Hot dog buns — optional, but I love them

How to Cook Hot Dogs in the Air Fryer

STEP ONE: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.

STEP TWO: Place the hot dogs inside the air fryer in a single layer not touching and cook them for 4 minutes.

STEP THREE: Place the hot dogs in a bun and air fry for another 1-2 minutes until the bun is slightly toasty (optional, but one of my favorite parts).

tips for the Best Air Fryer Hot Dogs

  • Cook the hot dogs in a preheated air fryer for even cooking
  • Cut slits in a diagonal line on the air fry hot dogs to look like they came off the grill — though this is not needed for even cooking. It’s just for aesthetics.
  • Use a silicone air fryer liner for an easy cleanup
  • Do not use parchment paper or foil unless your air fryer will be full of hot dogs. They are not big or heavy enough to hold them down.
  • Store any leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days.
  • If you preferred a lesser browned hot dog, cook them at 380 degrees for about 5 minutes.

Hot Dog Variations

  • Use a vegan hot dog instead of the normal beef kind.
  • Use a turkey, chicken, or pork hot dog per your preference.
  • Add some BBQ sauce to the hot dogs to make an air fryer version of my BBQ hot dogs.
  • Top the hot dogs with chili and cheese to make a delicious chili cheese dog!
  • Wrap them in bacon for an extra bit of salty and savory flavor.

What to serve with Air Fryer Hot Dogs

I love to serve my hot dogs with some side dishes like baked beans, sweet potato fries, and fruit salad on a normal weeknight.

If I’m hosting a barbecue or party with some friends, I will also make some cucumber salad, potato salad, pasta salad, and some of my hot dog chili recipe to go alongside them.

My Favorite Toppings For Hot Dogs

My kids love a ton of ketchup on their hot dogs, but I like to switch it up with other fun toppings and condiments such as relish, roasted peppers and onions, mushrooms, sauerkraut, habanero mango salsa, buffalo sauce with blue cheese, and my current favorite — coleslaw.

I do not understand your hot dog recipe . Do you put the wieners in the basket to cook them. What do you mean when you say move the basket half way through?????????? Also Can I cook a roast in the air fryer without putting it on the rotisserie ?????

    1. everydayfamily says:

Hi Jaclyn, based on the question about the rotisserie, it sounds like you have an oven-style air fryer. The basket refers to a basket-style air fryer. For yours, you will put the hot dogs on the rack and use tongs to turn them halfway through cooking.

And yes, you can cook anything you would like without using the rotisserie feature. You just need to flip it over to cook both sides halfway through!

Will never grill a hotdog again unless I’m at the beach or camping without my air fryer!

Just made this and so smart. The hotdogs were cooked and buns just perfectly crispy. I added some cheese in the buns before toasting. So good thank you 🙂

Hi there. I just finished reading your recipe for air fryer hot dogs and at the end of your recipe (was terrific) there was four added recipes, which one was: chili hotdogs. When i clicked on this the recipe was for boil eggs, NOT, chili dogs. Just FYI.

    2. Samantha says:

Hi Ramona, I appreciate it! I just updated it to the chili cheese dogs.

My husband is now the main cook in the family (my injury).I just want to have the hot Dogs come out with alot of black. Hopefully this recipe will work. Thanks for sharing this recipe. **

  6. Dee says:

I have an oven style air fryer and I love this recipe. The hot dogs are perfect and my house doesn’t smell after cooking. I did find my rolls were too dry so I just warmed them up separately.

  7. Annika says:

at the end it says how to reheat frozen hot dogs – is that the whole hotdog (bun and meat)? or is it just the frozen meat?
trying to teach my 12 year old how to make some lunches with the Ninja Foodi – this one sounds great and if i can prep it ahead for the freezer, that would be even better

    1. Samantha says:

Just the hot dogs from refrigeration. I recommend only cooking the number of buns you need as you’re eating them for the most freshness.

Other than out on the grill these are the BEST hot dogs I have had, bar none.

    1. Sam says:

Hi CFB, So glad to hear you love them!

  12. Sandra says:

I air fried some Nathan’s normal size wieners by your recipe 400 degrees for 4 minutes turning after 2 minutes. I didn’t cook them longer in the bun. We like our wieners cooked more and more of a grilled look. These were barely hot inside.
    Open for suggestions

    1. Samantha says:

Hi Sandra, a few things could have caused that. Always make sure the air fryer is preheated. It can take a full 4 minutes for an air fryer to get to that temperature, so it needs to be preheated prior to putting the hot dogs in it. Also, make sure there are too many hot dogs in there at once or it can cause them to cook closer. Lastly, if this is an air fryer toaster style oven, I find that my food needs a few extra minutes to cook to get to what an air fryer basket does because of the size of the air fryer. Enjoy!
