Air Fryer Chili Cheese Dogs

It is officially winter here in New York and I’m in complete comfort food mode. That’s why I created these simple Air Fryer Chili Cheese Dogs.

They’re super easy to make and you can’t replicate the delicious taste from the air fryer.

The hot dog buns are toasted inside the air fryer to create a crispy toasted texture. That’s something that would take 10 minutes alone in the air fryer – more than the total time of this recipe in its entirety!

Air Fryer I recommend: Large, easy to clean, square basket, burner on top and bottom. Click to see it.

If I used a circular basket, I would need to cook them in batches with one hot dog bun in there at a time. While it’s only an extra 1-2 minutes, the time can add up when doubling this recipe for a family of 4.

How to Make Air Fryer Hot Dogs

Hot dogs are insanely easy to make in an air fryer. Just remove them from the refrigerated package, place them in an air fryer preheated at 400 degrees, and cook for 4 minutes turning them halfway through.

If you’re like me, you’re planning to make this recipe and just realized your hot dogs are sitting frozen in the freezer. That’s okay. You can actually cook frozen hot dogs in your air fryer.

Fresh Hot Dogs inside Air Fryer

If cooking hot dogs from frozen, follow these directions:

Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees.

Place little slits across the hot dogs using a knife.

Cook hot dogs for 7-8 minutes, turning them once halfway through.

Cooking them at a lower temperature allows the hot dogs to cook from the inside out instead of burning the skin while the inside is still frozen.

How to Make Air Fryer Chili Cheese Dogs

Once your hot dogs are finished cooking in the air fryer, remove them from the basket and place inside the big hot dog buns or sausage rolls.

I tend to use sausage rolls for this recipe, so the bun is bigger. If using larger rolls, I suggest choosing a longer style hot dog, so it fills the entire roll.

Add half of the cheese to the hot dogs on the buns, then top with chili and add remaining cheese over top.

I like to place the hot dogs in the air fryer and add the chili and cheese while they are inside.

Turn your air fryer to 350 degrees and cook for 1-2 minutes until cheese has melted and chili is warm.

Carefully remove the chili cheese dogs from the air fryer and enjoy!

What Kind of Chili Can I Use in This Recipe?

I love making this recipe with leftover homemade chili when we have it. It’s such an easy way to use up the rest of it. This is my favorite homemade chili with meat I recommend for these Air Fryer Chili Cheese Dogs.

I even make double the recipe and freeze half to use later.

You can also make it with canned chili. Just pick up your favorite variety at the store, open the can, and add it right in!

*If you are using refrigerated chili, you will need to heat it up to at least room temperature before adding it to the hot dog bun.

Can I Reheat These Chili Cheese Dogs?

Yes! I love reheating food inside my air fryer. I recommend only assembling the number of chili dogs you will eat that night since the bun can get soggy when reheating everything in its entirety.

Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees.

Reheat your hot dogs for 2-3 minutes until hot, then complete the recipe as normal.
