STEP ONE: Preheat your air fryer to 360 degrees F. Prep the chicken and remove the giblets (if any) as well as the neck. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels.
STEP TWO: Make your dry rub by combining the black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika in a small bowl. Apply the spice mixture all over the entire chicken, making sure that the seasonings stick.
STEP THREE: Place the bird into the air fryer with the breast side up and air fry the whole chicken for 40 minutes. Flip, then cook for 15-20 minutes more.
STEP FOUR: Insert a meat thermometer at the thickest part of the thigh to check that the internal temperature is 165 degrees F.
STEP FIVE: Remove your air fryer rotisserie chicken from the basket and let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Tips to Make the Best Air Fryer Whole Chicken
- Pat large chicken dry before adding in the dry rub seasoning mix. This will allow the baked chicken in the air fryer to get extra crispy.
- Use an alarm thermometer and stick it into the whole chicken. This will beep when the chicken hits 165 degrees so it doesn’t overcook.
- Add 1 to 2 pieces of bread under the basket inside the drawer to help catch any drippings. You can also add ¼ cup of water to the drawer instead. This helps keep your air fryer from smoking.
- For extra crispy skin, increase the temperature to 400 degrees for the last 2 to 3 minutes of cooking.
- To get the best air fryer chicken possible, tie the legs of the chicken together using cooking twine. While not mandatory, it does help to keep the inside of the chicken moist and keeps it from drying out.

So glad you loved it, Susan!
Hi! I’m looking forward to trying this but I have a 4 lb chicken; any suggestions for the reduced cooking time? I don’t want to overcook it but I don’t want to have to obsessively check the temperature either. I haven’t used my air fryer very much yet. Lol
Haha, I know what you mean about obsessively checking on it. You don’t want to see how some foods test over here. I would start checking it about 15 minutes earlier and then check every 5 minutes from there. Also, if you don’t have one, I recommend a very quick Instant-Read Thermometer so it’s a quick process to check it. My old one used to take 10-15 seconds and my newer one takes about 2 seconds at most.
Great, thank you!
Thank you for sharing. So good!
I love added paprika. Chicken looks delicious. I’m making this for weekend. Thanks!
So easy to make! Thank you so much for sharing this very helpful idea! Will surely make this one again! Loved it!

What size air fryer do you use for this recipe?
I used my 5.8 QT Cosori air fryer. I recommend 5.8 QTs or larger for this one.
I have a 4L Air fryer what size chicken should I buy
Hi Richard, I believe that should hold about a 3lb chicken, but I recommend measuring the chicken and basket before buying as each basket is different.
Hi there! I am about to use your chicken recipe – I notice that you don’t use oil on the chicken? Most of the other recipes I have seen recommend either spraying or dabbing the chicken with oil. Please could you elaborate? I also have the large Cosori. Thanks!
Hi Barbara, I haven’t needed oil when cooking a whole chicken in there, but you can add a little onto the chicken if you would like to make the spices easier to evenly coat the chicken. Enjoy!
Can you add butter to this recipe?
Yes! You can add in butter, but I do find without it, the skin gets crispy and flavorful on its own without the extra added fat.
