Turkey Avocado Sandwich

Our turkey avocado sandwich is just like you’d get at Panera — only better! Tangy mustard and tender greens set our avocado turkey sandwich apart. And it’s so easy to make!

There’s nothing more simple and easy than a sandwich for lunch, but it’s easy to get tired of the same ham and cheese or PB&J. And any sandwich you’d go out and buy will cost a fortune! 

That’s why I wanted to put together a very quick, healthy, and filling roasted turkey sandwich to enjoy time and time again. Especially when I’m bogged down with Thanksgiving leftovers!

I modeled this turkey bacon avocado sandwich after our fast food favorite, but with a few changes: extra condiments to add moisture and acidity, arugula (less slippery and more accessible than Panera’s emerald greens), and a substantial sourdough to hold it all together.

And while you can dress this avocado turkey sandwich up with a few extras, you can also make it plain and simple with some quick and easy substitutions. Whatever you need for the day, this turkey avocado sandwich can make it happen!

How to Make a Turkey Avocado Sandwich

STEP ONE: Toast the sourdough. Combine the mayo, dijon, and garlic in a small bowl. Spread over one side of each slice of the toasted bread.

STEP TWO: Layer the thin avocado slices over the bottom slice of bread. Sprinkle the salt and fresh cracked pepper over top.

STEP THREE: Place the sliced meat on top of the avocados. Follow with the bacon slices and sliced tomato.

Topping this turkey sandwich with arugula.

STEP FOUR: Lay the arugula as the final layer, spreading evenly, and drizzle lightly with olive oil. If desired, season with a bit more salt and pepper.

STEP FIVE: Place the top slice of toasted bread on top of the arugula and serve your turkey avocado sandwich right away.

What to Serve With Turkey Bacon Avocado Sandwich

Variations for Avocado Turkey Sandwich

  • A toasted ciabatta will do a good job of holding all of the fillings together, but porous or thin breads should be avoided.
  • Storebought Dijonnaise or another favorite topping can take the place of our mayo, dijon, and garlic spread (our shortcut to an aioli). Or whip up an aioli! Make this turkey bacon avocado sandwich as fancy as you want.
  • Regular deli or pre-packed lunch meat still makes for a great avocado turkey sandwich, so don’t hesitate to use that instead to save some time. 
  • Scallions or chives add some sharp oniony flavor for those who desire it. 
  • Use turkey bacon instead to make this a double turkey bacon avocado sandwich! It’s definitely a healthier alternative to regular pork bacon.
  • Replace the avocado slices with a zesty avocado crema for an all-around less slippery experience. It’s more like a spread and can even replace the mayo.
  • Mix some hot sauce or paprika in with your mayo for extra zesty, spicy flavor.

Are Avocado and Turkey Good For You?

Avocado is excellent for you. Your body needs fat to function, and avocados contain 60% monosaturated fats that are great for your heart and blood pressure. They also have potassium and fiber in spades for full-body benefits.

Turkey is also one of the leanest proteins you can eat. It’s also low in fat (making it a great partner for avocados in any recipe) and a solid source of vitamins and minerals.

How to Make a Sandwich With Avocado? 

The trick is to use avocados that are ripe and ready rather than a solid, unripe fruit that will slip and slide right out from between the pieces of bread after your first bite.

Additionally, don’t use slices that are too large or thick or you will see the same result. Thin slices that are roughly 1” wide are best for an avocado BLT or other sandwiches that  you want to add a bit of creaminess to.

What Kind Of Cheese Goes Well With Turkey?

Monterey Jack, cheddar, parmesan, gouda, and provolone pair well with roasted turkey as well as all of the other toppings we have here.

I’d recommend toasting the bread with the cheese, or otherwise melting the cheese onto the bread, to help it meld cohesively with the other toppings.

This turkey avocado sandwich is the perfect quick and easy feel-good meal. Crisp toasted sourdough is layered with a homemade garlic aioli, creamy avocado, sliced turkey, and crisp, salty bacon. Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 slices sourdough or sandwich bread toasted
  • ½ avocado thinly sliced
  • 4 ounces sliced turkey
  • 2 slices crisp cooked bacon
  • 1 roma tomato sliced
  • 1 cup arugula
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Instructions
 

  • In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, dijon, and garlic powder.
  • Spread the shortcut aioli over one side of each piece of toasted bread 
  • Layer the sliced avocado over the aioli and sprinkle it with a pinch of kosher salt and cracked black pepper. 
  • Next layer on the sliced turkey followed by the bacon and tomato. 
  • Lastly, pile on the arugula and drizzle it with olive oil.
  • Season with another pinch of kosher salt and cracked black pepper. 
  • Place the second piece of bread, dressing side down, on top of the arugula and enjoy.
