My 3 Ingredient Blueberry Cobbler Recipe
My blueberry cobbler with cake mix is so delicious that you’d never guess how simple it actually is to layer and get baking. It definitely comes in handy whenever I’m short on time.
The first time I made this easy blueberry cobbler recipe, my husband Ben was shocked by how quickly it came together. It was less than 10 minutes from the time I told him I was thinking about making it, to when I was popping the loaded baking dish right into the oven!
If you’re wondering why I might prefer making this cake mix cobbler over my recipe for from scratch blueberry cobbler, it’s because of how effortless the process is in comparison.
In fact, this recipe is nicknamed blueberry dump cake because there’s so little to do aside from dumping the ingredients into the baking dish. Cake mix and pie filling simplify my classic cobbler recipe in a way that makes it truly effortless.
On top of that, this dessert can be prepared a day in advance, so you can save time while still enjoying it warm and fresh later.

Easy Blueberry Cobbler Ingredients
- Blueberry pie filling – Canned blueberry pie filling makes this dessert simple and delicious. This thick, sweet, and slightly tart filling gives the recipe its delightful berry flavor.
- Boxed cake mix – Using cake mix is my favorite shortcut for making cobbler. Since the ingredients are already mixed, you can simply dump and go instead of making dough from scratch. Butter golden cake mix is my go-to for this recipe!
- Melted butter – Adds to the overall richness of the cobbler and crumbly topping while also helping the edges brown and crisp up beautifully. I use unsalted butter so the recipe doesn’t turn out overly salty.

Expert Tips
- Don’t drain any liquid from the pie filling can. Canned pie filling typically has some thickened, syrupy liquid in it. This holds the filling together and adds moisture and structure to the dessert.
- Avoid overmixing. Your cake and butter mixture should be slightly lumpy rather than smooth. Overmixing will make the final product dense instead of light and crumbly, so work gently for the best texture.
- Be sure not to stir the blueberries and crumble topping. The crumbles should sit right on top of the blueberry layer. Mixing the two layers together will result in a soggy dessert.
- If my cobbler is browning too quickly, I cover it with aluminum foil for the remaining bake time. This helps it reach that beautiful golden brown color without drying out.
Variations
- If butter golden cake mix is unavailable, vanilla would be my next pick. Lemon cake mix would also be a fun twist, and classic yellow cake mix always works in a pinch.
- You can use fresh or frozen berries to make this easy blueberry cobblerif you prefer, but the recipe will need to be adjusted slightly. See how it’s done in my old fashioned blueberry cobbler recipe.
- A sprinkle of cinnamon is one of my favorite ways to customize the flavor of this cobbler, just like I do with my peach cobbler. It adds subtle, earthy warmth that complements the sweetness of the fruit perfectly.
- Sanding sugar is optional but will give this simple dessert extra crunch and an additional layer of sweetness too.
What to Serve with Blueberry Dump Cake
My blueberry cobbler with cake mix is best served with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cold temperature contrast and rich, creamy flavor really take the dessert to the next level. I also love pairing this cobbler recipe with my homemade whipped cream or with fresh, juicy blueberries for a light but refreshing touch.

Blueberry Cobbler with Cake Mix FAQs
Can I make this ahead of time?
Absolutely! You can assemble this 3 ingredient blueberry cobbler up to 1 day in advance and refrigerate it (covered) until it’s time to bake. For best results, I like to bake it fresh and serve it right away so the cobbler stays crisp.
How should I store leftovers?
Leftover cobbler can be stored for up to 1 day in the refrigerator before the crust will start to get soggy. Make sure to transfer it to an airtight container or cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap so that the blueberries don’t lose their beautiful color.
