STEP ONE: In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, combine the creamy peanut butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.

STEP TWO: Slowly pour the milk into the peanut butter mixture while stirring constantly. Mix until everything is well combined and there are no lumps.

STEP THREE: Gently fold in the Cool Whip. Be careful not to overmix, as we want the mousse to keep its fluffy texture.

STEP FIVE: Enjoy the mousse peanut butter dessert right away, or if you prefer it chilled, refrigerate until ready to serve. You can make the mousse up to 12 hours ahead of time!

Tips for the Best Mousse with Peanut Butter

  • Adjust the consistency. If the mousse is too thick, add a splash of milk and mix until desired consistency is achieved.
  • Opt for smooth peanut butter. We want the creamiest texture possible, so avoid any chunks of peanuts in the peanut butter mousse. Stir-free peanut butter like Skippy or Jif works best for a consistent texture.
  • Thaw the Cool Whip. Whipped topping comes frozen, so be sure to place it in the refrigerator at least 6 hours before preparing this recipe.
  • Add the milk gradually to prevent clumps and achieve a smooth consistency.

Variations for this Peanut Butter Mousse Recipe

  • Add a swirl of chocolate sauce or melted chocolate on top of the mousse for a fun twist!
  • Garnish with crushed pretzels for a delightful sweet-salty combo.
  • A dollop of your favorite fruit jam can transform this into a PB&J dessert!
  • For the peanut butter enthusiasts: add chopped peanut butter cups or mini Reese’s cups on top of the chilled mousse.
  • Nutter Butter cookies are a fun garnish — add them whole or crushed as a topping.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm and comforting twist.

Can I Use Granulated Sugar Instead of Powdered Sugar?

To achieve that light, fluffy texture, it’s best to use powdered sugar. However, if you don’t have any, it’s super easy to make!

All you need to do is mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch into every cup of granulated sugar, then add the mixture to a food processor. Blend the two together until soft and powdery.

Can This Mousse Peanut Butter Recipe Be Made Vegan?

Of course! Replace the milk with almond milk or any other dairy-free milk of your choice. Opt for a non-dairy whipped topping, such as coconut whipped cream, to achieve the same light and fluffy texture.

How Long Does Peanut Butter Mousse Last in the Refrigerator?

This dessert can be refrigerated for up to 3-4 days in an airtight container. Keep in mind the light, fluffy texture will lessen as it spends more time in the fridge.
