My Easy Way to Make Baked Hot Dogs

Making hot dogs in the oven has always been my go-to method of cooking them for as long as I can remember. It works great when I’m cooking a bunch of hot dogs for my family and friends all at the same time.

I’ve baked them so many times that I’ve perfected the time and temperature down to a science for a juicy perfectly cooked hot dog. Plus, I put a slit right through the top to make sure they don’t expand.

My daughter Leah loves when she sees me pulling a full baking sheet of baked hot dogs out of the oven as she knows she can eat as many as she wants (I usually limit her to one a night).

Oven Roasted Hot Dogs Ingredients

  • Hot dogs – Ball Park Franks or Nathans are my personal favorite brands, but any hot dogs will work just fine. They usually come in a pack of 8 or 10, and I always cook them all.
  • Hot dog buns – The soft, tender bread crisps up beautifully when baked in the oven.
  • Condiments – Having a variety to choose from makes it easy for everyone to personalize their hot dogs to their own liking. There are tons of options when it comes to sauces and toppings, so feel free to get creative here.

How to Cook Hot Dogs in the Oven

STEP ONE: While the oven preheats to 400 degrees F, line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

STEP TWO: Next, place the hot dogs on the baking sheet and cut a slit into each one.

Hands cutting splits down the hot dogs so they don't expand in the oven.

STEP THREE: Bake the hot dogs in the oven for 10 to 13 minutes, then remove them immediately.

STEP FOUR: Place the hot dog bread on a baking sheet and slide it into the oven for 2 minutes to warm them up slightly.

STEP FIVE: Arrange the hot dogs in buns and top with desired condiments. Serve and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • I line my baking sheet with foil for easy clean up every time. It catches all the grease and can simply be tossed at the end.
  • Be sure to cut a slit into the hot dogs before baking so that they don’t burst in the oven. I use a small knife and cut them lengthwise.
  • To ensure even cooking, arrange the hot dogs in a single layer with about 1 inch of space in between each one.
  • Remove the hot dogs from the oven immediately once they are finished baking. Leaving them in the oven for too long will cause them to shrivel and dry out.
  • Toasting the bread cut-side up is my best tip for getting perfectly golden buns.

Topping Ideas

  • Diced or sliced onions add a wonderful flavor and texture to any hot dog! I go with raw onions when I want a sharp flavor and a satisfying crunch, or grilled onions when I’m craving something softer and sweeter.
  • Ketchup, mustard, and relish are my kids’ favorite toppings, and hot dogs in the oven would be incomplete without these classic condiments. Their sweet and tangy flavors complement each other perfectly.
  • Mayonnaise can be drizzled on top or spread on the inside of the bread for a creamy, buttery taste.
  • A heaping scoop of chili will give these hot dogs additional savory flavor and make them even heartier! Don’t forget to sprinkle some cheese on top of the chili too.
  • Jalapeños are the topping my husband always requests to add a little bit of heat to the recipe.

What to Serve with Baked Hot Dogs

Some of my favorite savory sides to serve with these hot dogs include my baked beans recipe, Velveeta mac and cheese, and my easy macaroni salad. I also love pairing them with grilled corn on the cob or a crunchy side of coleslaw. Other classic items that pair well with hot dogs include air fryer French fries and my thick and hearty hot dog chili!

Hot Dogs in the Oven FAQs

Why did my hot dogs split?

Hot dogs tend to burst and split open when they don’t have any type of vent to release the steam. To avoid this, I highly recommend cutting a slit in each hot dog before popping the baking sheet into the oven.

How to store leftovers

Leftover hot dogs will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 4 days when stored in an airtight container. I always keep the extra buns separate (at room temperature) so that they don’t get soggy, then warm them up once ready to serve.

How do I reheat leftovers?

The easiest way to reheat a batch of cooked hot dogs is in the oven at 350 degrees F. They will be ready to serve in about 10 minutes. If I’m reheating just one or two, I’ll toss them into a skillet instead until warmed through.

Good morning, hotdogs in my airfryer fryer come out every bit as good as grilled hotdogs!!!

Hi Tom, I think so too! I love using this recipe when it’s too cold to drag out the grill. Enjoy!

  2. Mary says:

Question: It’s hard to tell from the pictures. How long a slit do you make in the hot dogs before baking. Is it all along the side or just a small slit in the center?

    1. Sam says:

Hi Mary, I make a large slit on the side from one end to the other. This will ensure your hot dogs don’t burst in the oven. I hope this helps!
