My Easy way to Make New York Strip in the Air Fryer
The first time I made air fryer New York strip steak, it was on a snowy Friday night when grilling outside just wasn’t an option. I had these beautiful steaks sitting in the fridge, and I wanted that steakhouse-style crust without braving the cold.
I’ve made strip steak on the grill, in a cast iron skillet, and even under the broiler, but the air fryer ended up being the best of all worlds! I was so happy when I pulled the steaks out and saw I had a gorgeous sear, plus the inside stayed perfectly tender. And I didn’t have to deal with splattering oil or constant flipping in a hot pan!
My husband Ben has always said a steak is meant to be grilled, and to be honest, he can grill a mean steak! But after he took a bite, even he had to admit the air fryer might be the best way to cook the perfect New York strip steak.

Air Fry New York Strip Ingredients
- New York strip steaks – This cut is juicy, flavorful, and cooks beautifully in the air fryer. I like to choose 1-inch thick, well-marbled steaks for extra tenderness.
- Extra-virgin olive oil – Helps the seasonings stick and gives me that crisp on the exterior. Olive oil, other neutral oil, or butter works well as a substitute.
- Salt – Brings out the natural beefy flavor. I always season generously for the best taste.
- Garlic powder – I love how this adds a savory kick without overpowering the steak.
- Black pepper – This rounds out the seasoning with a warm, peppery bite.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Strip Steak
- I allow the steaks to come to room temperature to help them cook more evenly. I usually set mine out on the counter for about 30 minutes before air frying.
- I pat my steaks dry to help them brown better. I’ve noticed that a dry surface gets a crispier crust.
- For the best flavor, I season generously with salt, garlic powder, and pepper.
- I always preheat my air fryer before adding the steaks to help me get that steakhouse-style sear on the outside.
- To ensure even cooking on both sides, I flip the steaks halfway through cooking.
- I always let the steaks rest for at least 5 minutes so they can reabsorb their juices.
Air Fry New York Strip Variations and Substitutions
- If I’m in the mood for a richer crust, I’ll swap the olive oil out for melted butter.
- For a bolder flavor, I’ll replace the garlic powder and pepper with Montreal steak seasoning.
- I sometimes add smoked paprika for a hint of smokiness.
- One of my favorite “steakhouse touches” is to use coarse sea salt that gives the crust a more pronounced texture.
- When I want an herby twist, I’ll season the steaks with fresh rosemary or thyme.
- For an impressive finish, I’ll top the steak with garlic butter just before serving.

Air Fryer New York Strip FAQs
How should I store leftover NY strip in the air fryer?
I keep my leftover steak in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. If I’ve sliced it, I make sure to include any juices in the container to keep it tender.
How long to air fryer NY strip steak
I like my steak cooked medium rare, so for a 1-inch steak that’s about 8 ounces, 10-12 minutes total is perfect! For medium doneness, I would cook for about 15 minutes. For well-done, the steak should be air fried for 18-20 minutes.
How should I reheat leftovers?
To reheat, I start by preheating my air fryer to 350 degrees F. Once hot, I air fry the leftover steak for 3-4 minutes so it warms through without overcooking.
Why is my air fryer New York steak tough?
When my strip steak turns out tough, it’s usually from overcooking or not letting it rest after cooking. I always give my steak time to rest so it can reabsorb the juices as the meat fibers relax, and this makes all the difference!
