My Easy Lemon Pepper Wing Sauce

Lemon pepper sauce has been a staple in my house for years now. I remember trying it the first time about 10 years ago at a local pub and just needed to make it at home.

I like my wing sauce either spicy or on the sweet side, so I added some honey into the sauce to give it some sweetness and create a slight sticky texture to stick to the wings better.

Of course, I created them to be super easy. So easy in fact that it’s only 5 ingredients all in one bowl, and only 5 minutes to make. And, I honestly love my homemade version more now than the lemon pepper wing sauce at my local restaurants.

Ingredients for lemon pepper sauce: lemon juice, lemon pepper seasoning, honey, butter, cayenne pepper.

Lemon Pepper Sauce for Wings Ingredients

  • Butter – Creates a rich, silky texture for the sauce. I like to use unsalted butter since the lemon pepper seasoning already contains salt.
  • Honey – Thickens the sauce while also adding the perfect amount of sweetness to cut through the acidity and tanginess of the lemon.
  • Lemon juice – Fresh lemon juice is the key ingredient that brings this recipe to life! The bright and tart notes complement the peppery notes so well.
  • Lemon pepper seasoning – Classic lemon pepper seasoning blends feature a mix of lemon zest, cracked black pepper, salt, and sometimes even garlic powder or onion powder. I usually reach for a pre-made mix.
  • Cayenne pepper – Infuses savory, earthy heat into each bite. Only a pinch is needed as a little bit goes a long way.

How to Make Lemon Pepper Sauce

STEP ONE: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter and then allow it to cool slightly.

STEP TWO: Combine the honey, lemon juice, and seasonings with the butter, then whisk it until they are all fully incorporated.

STEP THREE: After tasting the sauce, feel free to add more lemon pepper or cayenne for an additional kick.

STEP FOUR: Drizzle the sauce over chicken wings or any dish of choice, and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • When it comes to choosing the right honey, I prefer to opt for a mild option. Lighter variations like clover have a subtle, delicate sweetness that adds to the overall taste of the sauce without being overpowering.
  • Use fresh lemons, not bottled! While bottled may be more convenient, freshly squeezed lemon juice truly makes such a difference in the overall taste and tanginess of the recipe.
  • I always set aside some lemon zest before juicing the lemon. This can be added later if the sauce needs a little more brightness.
  • Be sure to use cracked black pepper if making a homemade seasoning blend or if adding more pepper to taste. Cracked black pepper has a sharper and more distinct flavor than the ground kind from the store.
  • Feel free to double the recipe as needed. This recipe yields ¾ cup of sauce, and I use about ½ cup per pound of chicken whenever serving it with wings.

Variations and Substitutions

  • If pre-made lemon pepper seasoning is unavailable, I make my own homemade version! The ingredients are simple, and the seasoning blend comes together without any hassle.
  • For additional heat, add in more cayenne pepper, or mix in some red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce. My husband loves personalizing this recipe with the extra spice!
  • To give this sauce a creamy twist, melt some freshly grated parmesan cheese into the butter as it cools. Adding a splash of cream is another way to give this sauce a rich and creamy texture!
  • Herbs make a great addition to this sauce, adding another subtle layer of freshness as well as a pop of color. Parsley or dill are my personal favorites to add in.

What to Serve with Honey Lemon Pepper Sauce

Lemon pepper sauce is most often paired with classic chicken recipes like baked chicken wings, air fryer chicken wings, baked chicken tenders, or breaded chicken cutlets. My family also loves serving this tasty sauce with fish recipes, especially shrimp or my baked salmon. Some of my other go-to items to serve with this sauce include pasta, tofu, and roasted or steamed vegetables.

Lemon Pepper Sauce FAQs

What if I want my wing sauce thicker?

My easiest trick for thickening this sauce is letting it simmer on the stovetop over low heat for a few minutes. Just be sure to watch it carefully so that the ingredients don’t burn or curdle! If I still want to thicken it any more after that, I’ll mix in a cornstarch slurry and then whisk until the sauce reaches my desired texture.

How to store leftovers

Stored in an airtight container, my homemade sauce will last for up to 5 days in the refrigerator. This lemon pepper recipe also freezes well for up to 3 months and can easily be thawed overnight in the refrigerator before using it again.
