Why I stopped buying bottled honey mustard

Only 3 ingredients – You use a quarter cup each of mayo, honey, and Dijon. Once you know that ratio you can make it without looking the recipe up again.

5 minutes and one bowl – There’s no cooking and no chopping, so I whisk all three together in a small bowl and it’s done. That’s why I keep a jar in my fridge instead of a bottle from the store, and it’s how most of my sauce recipes go.

The mayo is what makes it creamy – Honey mustard without mayonnaise comes out thin and runs right off a chicken tender. I tested it both ways before I landed on a quarter cup, and now it’s thick enough to coat instead of pooling on the plate.

This 3 ingredient honey mustard is a flavorful homemade sauce that I always have on hand in my refrigerator. My family goes through this sauce quickly, so it’s never too long before I’m whipping up a new batch that we can all use for dipping!

When it comes to picking sauces, my daughter, Leah, will often go back and forth between sweet and savory as her preference. Luckily, with this honey mustard dipping sauce, she can enjoy both without having to choose just one!

My easy honey mustard strikes the perfect balance between tangy, sweet, and savory.

Ingredients for honey mustard: Honey, mayonnaise, and dijon mustard.

3 ingredient honey mustard recipe ingredients

  • Dijon mustard – Dijon is my favorite type of mustard to use for this recipe. It has a sharp, tangy flavor that isn’t quite as sour as yellow mustard. It’s also an emulsifier, so it holds the mayo and honey together instead of letting them separate in the jar.
  • Honey – Thickens the recipe when chilled and adds a rich, natural sweetness to the dip. Classic clover honey is my go-to because of how balanced and clean the taste is. Maple syrup works as a substitute, but will change the flavor of the sauce.
  • Mayonnaise – This creamy, savory condiment forms the creamy base of the honey mustard sauce. I always go with full-fat mayo for the best flavor and the smoothest texture. I don’t recommend using Miracle Whip as a substitute because it has sugar added to it, and the honey already adds plenty of sweetness, unlike my Big Mac sauce where I use it on purpose for the extra tang.

How to make honey mustard

A full printable version of this recipe with ingredient measurements is available at the bottom of this post.

STEP ONE: In a small bowl, add the Dijon mustard, honey, and mayonnaise, then mix until the ingredients are well combined.

STEP TWO: Whisk everything together until the ingredients are well combined. Taste it. If it tastes too sharp, add a little more honey, and if it tastes too sweet, add in a bit more Dijon mustard.

STEP THREE: Serve immediately or store in the fridge until it’s ready to be used!

Recipe tips

  • Use a whisk for easy mixing. This helps me get the smoothest texture and combine all the ingredients without any clumps.
  • If you prefer a thinner sauce, mix in tiny splashes of water until you reach your desired consistency. A little bit goes a long way here, so make sure to add it in gradually!
  • Serve it chilled when you can! I always keep this 3 ingredient honey mustard in the refrigerator because it’s best served cold, but it’s still fine to serve right away, especially if the mayo and Dijon mustard were in the fridge already.
  • Stir before serving. Honey mustard tends to thicken up a bit when it sits in the refrigerator, so be sure to give it a good stir right before serving it.
  • Double the recipe if needed. My family goes through this sauce so quickly, so I sometimes make a double batch so there’s plenty to last all week. One batch will yield about ¾ cup sauce, so double or even triple this recipe if you know you’ll need more!

Variations

  • Don’t have Dijon mustard on hand? Spicy brown mustard will work well if you want subtle heat, but yellow mustard is the best substitute if you prefer a more mild flavor.
  • To make this recipe spicy, use hot honey instead of regular honey! Check out my easy hot honey sauce recipe to see how I make mine with red pepper flakes.
  • For a brighter taste, check your mayo label, and if it doesn’t include lemon juice, add a squeeze it. It brightens up the sauce without making everything taste lemony.
  • If you want to make this extra savory, roast and mince a fresh garlic clove and mix it right in. I love how this add-in infuses savory, earthy notes into each bite.

What to serve with homemade honey mustard sauce

My 3 ingredient honey mustard is the perfect dipping sauce to pair with savory meat dishes because the sweetness and tanginess complement the flavors so well. I love serving this sauce with easy dinners like my bone in pork chops in the oven and pork steaks in the oven, or with my turkey sliders or chicken tenders in the oven when I’m whipping up a quick, casual lunch!

3 ingredient honey mustard FAQs

What type of mustard is best for this recipe?

Dijon mustard is my personal favorite to use for this sauce recipe. It has a sharp, savory taste, and it cuts through the sweet honey much better than yellow mustard does.

My honey mustard is too sweet/too tangy. How do I fix it?

If your honey mustard is too tangy, add in more honey a little bit at a time to cut through the sharpness and acidity. If it’s too sweet, add more mustard for a deeper tang.

How should I store leftovers?

I always store my honey mustard in an airtight container or mason jar to keep it fresh. Stored in the refrigerator, it will last for up to 2 weeks!

3 Ingredient Honey Mustard (Creamy!)

My honey mustard is a quarter cup each of mayonnaise, honey, and Dijon mustard. You whisk all three together in a small bowl and it is done in 5 minutes, with nothing to cook and nothing to chop. The mayonnaise is what makes it thick enough to coat a chicken tender instead of running off it. One batch makes about three quarters of a cup.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Dijon mustard
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, add the Dijon mustard, honey, and mayonnaise.
  • Whisk everything together until it's well combined. Taste it and add more honey if it's too sharp, or more Dijon mustard if it's too sweet for your liking.
  • Serve immediately or store in the fridge until you're ready to use!

Notes

The sauce thickens up in the fridge, so do not add any other thickener if it seems thinner than your liking. Give it a good stir before you use again.
If you prefer a thinner sauce, whisk in a tiny splash of water. It loosens pretty quickly.
Store leftovers in an airtight container or tightly closed mason jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
