My Easy Recipe For French Toast in the Air Fryer
My air fryer French toast recipe is actually all thanks to my son Connor. Once, when my family went out to breakfast while on vacation, my husband ordered French toast and offered some to the kids to try, saying it was one of his favorite breakfasts.
My son took one bite, then said, “I bet Mom could make this.”
I don’t know if he knew exactly what he was doing or if he was giving me a very genuine compliment, but either way, now I had to do it! I’d made French toast before, but I hated how the traditional method meant babysitting the stove, and it never turned out very well in the oven.
But the air fryer was perfect! On a random Saturday morning when I woke up before everyone else, I got together all my ingredients and had a stack of French toast waiting by the time my husband and kids materialized in the kitchen. It was so easy, plus it ended up being such a fun morning around the table that air fryer French toast became a weekend staple!

Air Fried French Toast Ingredients
- Sandwich bread – I usually grab whatever bread we have on hand, but slightly stale bread slices hold up best in the French toast batter.
- Milk – Milk helps smooth out the egg mixture. I’ve used pretty much every type of milk, from whole milk to oat milk, depending on what’s in the fridge.
- Eggs – Eggs coat the outside of the French toast to help get that signature crisp.
- Granulated sugar – A little sugar adds sweetness without overpowering the cinnamon.
- Vanilla extract – Vanilla makes the French toast taste more like a bakery treat.
- Ground cinnamon – Cinnamon gives this yummy breakfast some extra warmth that really pulls all the flavors together.
- Kosher salt – I add just a pinch to balance the sweetness.
How to Make Air Fryer French Toast

STEP ONE: Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees F.
STEP TWO: In a medium-sized shallow bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until it’s well combined.

STEP THREE: Dip each piece of bread into the mixture, soaking both sides in the liquid for 15 seconds per side, then allow the excess to drip off.
STEP FOUR: Place the pieces of eggy bread in a single layer inside, working in batches as needed.

STEP FIVE: Air fry them for 6 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cook time.
STEP SIX: Serve hot with your desired toppings and enjoy.

Tips for the Best Air Fry French Toast
- To avoid soggy bread, I let excess egg mixture drip off each slice before placing it in the air fryer basket. This also prevents it from dripping and burning in the basket.
- For even cooking that gets each slice golden brown, I air fry the bread slices in a single layer.
- When I want everyone to eat together, I store each finished batch of air fryer French toast in the oven on WARM until I have enough slices for the whole family.
- To freeze leftover French toast, I let the slices cool, then place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in the freezer. Once frozen, I transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container.
- My favorite way to reheat French toast is to preheat the air fryer to 320 degrees F, then air fry the slices for 2-4 minutes depending on the thickness. It’s so easy!
Air Fryer French Toast Recipe Variations and Substitutions
- For stuffed French toast, I sandwich cream cheese and berries or banana slices between two cooked slices. This is my husband’s favorite way to eat it!
- If I want to make a low-carb version, I use keto bread and a sugar substitute. I almost can’t tell the difference!
- I love using challah bread for a really rich version that’s absolutely perfect for a quick breakfast during the holidays.
- For a tangy flavor twist, sourdough bread works surprisingly well. I gave it a try once, thinking it might turn out weird, but ended up loving it!
- To give the French toast a finishing flourish, I sometimes add a little maple syrup on top in the last 2-3 minutes of air frying so it has a chance to caramelize.
What to Serve with French Toast in the Air Fryer
For a nice big family breakfast, I love serving my air fryer French toast with classics like air fryer sausage, air fryer bacon, air fryer hash browns, or air fryer breakfast potatoes!
I also like setting out my fall fruit salad and some Cool Whip fruit dip!
