The cranberry fluff with Cool Whip I make ahead every Thanksgiving

Just 4 ingredients – A can of whole berry cranberry sauce, cream cheese, Cool Whip, and mini marshmallows are all I need. I love that it’s sweet and tart at the same time, with little chunks of cranberry in every bite!
Ready in 5 minutes – I whip the cream cheese, mix in the cranberry sauce, then fold in the Cool Whip and marshmallows. I fold it in gently so it stays light and fluffy instead of turning flat and soupy.
Easy to make ahead – I can make it up to 2 days before Thanksgiving and keep it covered in the fridge. It tastes even better the next day because the marshmallows get soft and the whole bowl sets up thick and creamy. That’s one less thing to make on the big day!
Cranberry fluff is one of my favorite retro recipes. The flavor strikes the perfect balance between sweet and tart, but it’s truly the texture that makes this recipe a winner!
My daughter, Leah, says that eating this recipe is like tasting the clouds. It’s light, airy, fluffy, and creamy all at once, making it such a dreamy and satisfying dish to enjoy.
This recipe is perfect for all types of occasions, but my absolute favorite time to serve it is Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Whether it’s on the table as a dessert or as a side, this cranberry marshmallow fluff salad is always devoured quickly and has folks asking for a copy of the recipe!
What makes this cranberry fluff salad such a treat is how simple it is. It takes 4 ingredients and there’s no baking at all, which is why it’s one of my favorite no bake desserts. Just mix gently until everything is combined.
Waiting patiently for it to finish chilling is the only part of this recipe that’s even slightly tricky, but I promise it will be worth the wait!

Cranberry fluff recipe ingredients
- Whole berry cranberry sauce – When it comes to flavor, canned cranberry sauce is the perfect blend of tart and sweet. I prefer the chunkiness of whole berry sauce over the smooth texture of jellied sauce.
- Mini marshmallows – Bring extra sweetness into the dish and add another layer of soft, pillowy texture to the fluff. My kids think the mini size is so fun, and I love how easy they are to fold in and distribute throughout the mixture.
- Cream cheese – Thickens the mixture and adds a delightful tangy flavor to complement the sweetness of the other ingredients. I use regular, full fat cream cheese for the richest and creamiest results.
- Cool Whip – This makes the cranberry flight light and fluffy, and it holds its shape in the fridge, which is why it works for making ahead. Thaw it in the fridge before you start. If you end up with an extra tub, I have lots more easy recipes with Cool Whip to use it up!

Recipe tips
- Soften the creamy ingredients first. I always let my cream cheese sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes and leave my Cool Whip to thaw in the refrigerator so they can soften up. This will ensure that they’re easy to mix.
- Use a hand mixer. This convenient tool makes it easy for me to whip up the creamy base in just a few minutes.
- Avoid overmixing! Mixing your cranberry fluff gently is key to keeping the texture light and airy, so be sure to work gently as you combine the ingredients and fold the mini marshmallows in.
- Don’t skip the chilling time. This step is essential to help the fluffy mixture firm up, and it’s meant to be served cold and straight out of the refrigerator too.
Variations
- If you don’t have cream cheese on hand, swap it for one 3.4-ounce box of instant vanilla pudding mix. I love how the vanilla goes with the cranberries!
- For a little more sweetness, fold in one 8-ounce can of crushed pineapple with the marshmallows. Drain it really well first, pressing it in a strainer, so the fluff doesn’t turn watery.
- Homemade whipped cream works instead of Cool Whip if you’re serving it the same day. Check out my easy homemade whipped cream to see how I make mine. For making it ahead, stick with Cool Whip since it holds its shape longer.
- For some crunch, fold in 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or slivered almonds with the marshmallows. My family loves it with either one.
- For warmth and balance, add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract while whipping the cream cheese.

Cranberry fluff FAQs
Can I make cranberry fluff ahead of time?
Absolutely! This cranberry fluff recipe can be made up to 2 days in advance and will still hold its texture so well, so it’s great for parties and potlucks. In fact, it can taste even better when prepared ahead of time because the marshmallows have softened and the ingredients have set fully.
What do I do if my cranberry fluff is too watery?
Give it more time in the fridge first, since it thickens as it chills. If it’s still loose, stir in another 1/2 cup of mini marshmallows. They soak up the extra liquid as they sit.
What is the secret to getting the perfect texture?
My trick for getting the most perfect, fluffy texture every time is mixing gently and allowing plenty of time for the mixture to chill.
How should I store leftovers?
Stored in an airtight container, this fluffy dessert can be refrigerated for up to 3 days from when it’s made. If you made it 2 days ahead, plan to finish it within a day after serving.
