My hot dog casserole is a true dump and bake. The sliced hot dogs go in the dish, the canned chili goes over them, and I stir it together right there instead of dirtying a bowl. Then a layer of cheddar, then frozen tater tots straight from the bag. It bakes uncovered so the tots come out golden, and the rest of the cheese melts on at the end.
1cupyellow onionfinely diced, about 1 medium onion
2teaspoonsgarlic powder
3cupsshredded cheddar cheesedivided
32ouncesfrozen tater tots
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray or oil.
Place the sliced hot dogs into the casserole dish then pour both cans of chili over them. Add in the diced onions and garlic powder, then stir everything together right in the dish.
Sprinkle 2 cups of the shredded cheese evenly over the hot dog and chili mixture.
Take the tater tots straight from the freezer and arrange them in a single layer over the cheese.
Put the tater tots in a single layer and avoid overlapping them so they all get crispy.
Bake the casserole, uncovered, for 45 minutes, or until the chili is hot and the tater tots turn golden brown and crispy.
Turn off the oven and then remove the casserole from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining cheese evenly over the tater tots and return the casserole back to the turned off oven. Let the cheese melt, for about 5 minutes.
Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Serve it as is, or with your favorite toppings, such as sour cream.
Notes
Store leftovers covered tightly in the casserole dish or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F for about 5 minutes to bring the tater tots back to being crispy.
