This simple creamy avocado lime crema is the perfect topping on various dishes. It can be used as a dip, sauce, or just drizzle on top of everything from salad and nachos to chicken and quinoa bowls and takes just 5 minutes to make.

I love avocados, but I am not someone who will stick a sliced avocado on something and call it a day. I need more of a flavor boost.

Guacamole is great, but there is a time and place for it when it comes to cooking. It provides a nice chunky and powerful flavor, but sometimes you need something a little creamier instead of guacamole.

That’s why I developed this Avocado Crema recipe to top any dish you want avocado on. It’s made explicitly without cilantro in it, but feel free to add some fresh cilantro herbs if you love them.

What is Avocado Crema Made of?

Avocado crema is an avocado sauce with a cream base. It combines avocado, cream, and other fresh ingredients to create a topping for many entrees.

What Does Avocado Cream Taste Like?

Avocado crema sauce mixes the creamy and tangy rich taste of sour cream and pairs it with a buttery flavor from the avocado. Together they make a thick and rich creamy sauce.

Avocado Crema Vs. Guacamole

Although avocado crema and guacamole are both made from avocados, they are completely different.

Avocado Crema is a creamy sauce that is smooth in texture and processed in a food processor or blender. It is made from a cream base, typically sour cream.

Guacamole is chunkier in texture without any added cream. It includes chunks of avocado and typically contains tomatoes.

How to Make Avocado Crema

STEP ONE: Wash your avocado and slice it in half. Remove the pit (or seed) by hitting it with a knife blade and carefully pulling it out.

STEP TWO: Scoop the avocado halves out of the skin.

STEP THREE: Put the sour cream, lime juice, sea salt, and garlic clove in the food processor or blender with the avocados.

STEP FOUR: Puree the avocado sauce until you get a smooth consistency.

STEP FIVE: Enjoy immediately or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Does Avocado Lime Crema Turn Brown?

Although avocados turn brown once opened, the lime juice in this recipe will prevent it from browning.

I love using one half of an avocado and rubbing the other half with a little lime juice or lemon juice to help it store nicely in the fridge.

Tips For Making the Best Avocado Crema Recipe

  • Use ripe avocados for the best taste. Unripe avocados can taste a little bitter and won’t get you that nice creamy crema texture.
  • It’s okay if the avocados don’t come out nicely from the peel. They will be pureed anyway!
  • You can use bottled lime juice or fresh lime juice for the same flavor.

How to Store Avocado Lime Crema

Once the avocado crema sauce is made, just place it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

I love making this crema recipe the night before so it’s all ready for tacos the next night!

Can Avocado Cream be frozen?

I have personally never tried freezing this recipe and do not recommend freezing anything with a dairy cream in it.

Variations to This Avocado Crema Recipe

  • Substitute the sour cream for plain Greek yogurt for a healthier crema. You can also use half sour cream and half Greek yogurt if that’s what you have on hand
  • Zest a fresh lime into the crema before blending for more of a pop to that lime flavor
  • Add seasonings such as chili powder, cumin, paprika, and garlic powder for a more seasoned crema
  • Add 1/4 cup of fresh cilantro into the crema to add more to the citrus flavor
  • Add a little water to thin out the crema to use as a creamy avocado dressing
